1st and Devs win on Saturday

12 Jan 2020 by Leon Turner

The 1st team were in action on Saturday hosting Knaphill Athletic. A much improved all round display from the Lemons would see them comfortably beat their opponents although the score line suggested a closer game than it ever actually was. Josh Richards opened the scoring as his shot already goal bound took a deflection to leave the visiting keeper with no chance as the Lemons took an early lead. Minutes later Josh Dawber found himself with space to shoot as a lovely move ended with the left back hitting another goal bound shot, another deflection once again left the goalkeeper flat footed and the hosts lead 2-0 with just 12 minutes on the clock. Playing against the wind the only difficulty was dealing with the Knaphill 5’s long ball into the channel, wind assisted it left the hosts pegged back although rarely did the visitors ever look threatening to make anything of it. With virtually the last kick of the half the Knaphill winger chased Jake Streeter back into the corner before clearly pushing him to the floor, with no foul given he crossed for Knaphill to pull one back on the stroke of half time.
The second half would play out with the hosts completely in control with Knaphill’s long hoof now ineffective into the wind and a combination of some ridiculous behaviour and fouls turned the game into a stop start one which often killed the home
Sides momentum. Elmer had the ball in the back of the net only to be called back for offside as we looked to extend the lead.
Full time 2-1 to Manorcroft.

The Devs were also in action Saturday against West Byfleet. A tense first half had both sides having spells of possession but with swirling winds and a sticky surface, attractive football was hard to come by. Connor Young had the best chance of the half when played in behind on the left hand side, he narrowly fired wide with Reece Gargan unable to slide in at the back post.

The second half saw the Devs have the advantage with the wind and got the lead through Reece Gargan not giving up a bouncing ball in the box as he held of the defender before finally getting the ball across the line. This saw an extended spell of possesion and chances for the Devs and Reece should have doubled the lead after good work by Young. From this West Byfleet went down the other end and after a good stop by Dylan Thrussell, the WB striker followed in and tapped into an empty net.
Both sides missed chances inside the last 10 minutes. But it was Gargan who had the final say for the 10 men Devs after a sin bin, who finished calmly when played in 1 on 1 to seal a good win for the Lemons development side.
Final score 2-1 to Manorcroft.

Good luck to all the juniors on Sunday and to the Youth Team who visit Sutton United to face SCR in the Midweek County Cup on Monday, 7:30 Kick Off.
